Various species of Moths, Weevils
and Beetles combine to form a group commonly referred to as
the stored product insects, they are responsible for infesting
and damaging most stored products. Combined they can eat and
contaminate, with their frass (insect faeces), a wide range
of products including wheat, flour, fruits, nuts, oil seeds,
cocoa beans, textiles, leather, drugs, poisons, fish and dried
meats.
A lot of damage is created by
larvae from diferent species of store product insects. Which
is the reason identification of the pest species involved is
very important. A variety of traps can be used to help identify
what pest is involved and can help gauge the level of infestation.
Some traps can contain a pheromone
lure to aid the detection of pests, once the species is determined
a suitable treatment can commence. Treatment can consist of
a combination of insecticide control measures combined with
good hygiene, and temperature controls.
