Squirrels
(Sciurus carolinensis)
Grey squirrels unlike the Red Squirrels were introduced from
the USA. Red Squirrels are protected and should never be harmed.
Reasons for control
1) They strip bark from trees in order to lick the sap. This
causes damage to older trees and will kill saplings
2) Squirrels make
nests called Dreys, in lofts of private houses. They often strip
large areas of insulation and will gnaw cables and wires, causing
fires in extreme circumstances. The noise created by Squirrels
in lofts can cause great distress to some people.
3) Squirrels are attracted
to warehouses which offer shelter and food. They can cause considerable
stock damage.
There are two breeding seasons for Grey Squirrels, January
to March & June to August. A normal litter is about
3-4 young and gestation is about six weeks.
Handling of grey squirrels should always be
avoided because they can give a nasty bite
