Cockroaches
Oriental Cockroach (Blatta
orientalis)
German Cockroach
(Blattella germanica)
The Oriental and German cockroaches are the most
common species in the uk. The German cockroach is the smaller
of the two and prefers a hotter more humid environment. Both
can carry disease into your premises either through their faeces
or carried on their body.
Cockroaches are nocturnal and will hide during
the day in cracks and crevices around drains, sinks, cookers
and in ducting. The mated female will lay(Oriental) or carry(German)
the "purses", containing the eggs. When the eggs hatch the nymphs
are adult cockroaches in miniature and have to go through several
moults before emerging as an sexually mature adult. They are
gregarious, and can produce large infestations.
The Environmental Health officers can take serious
action against any commercial food business, that are found
to be infested by cockroaches, and the damage caused to one's
reputation could be irreversible.
Cockroaches should only be treated by a professional
pest control technician, using specialist equipment and approved
pesticides.
